In the Night

OPENING IMAGE

Mari, a young woman, lies curled up in bed. She turns away from a phone flashing with unopened texts and the only light streaming in from a window.

SET-UP

Mourning the death of her mother, Mari spends her days sorting through the items in her childhood home.

THEME STATED

Mari does not leave the house, the only outside contact she has being the elderly neighbour that she grew up with. The neighbour tries to console her.

CATALYST

When Mari finally caves and leaves the house, she witnesses a girl around her age get hit by a car on the street but no one around seems to see the burning wreck.

DEBATE

Terrified, Mari runs back to her house and shuts herself in, unsure if the events prior were hallucinations.

BREAK INTO TWO

As Mari keeps having more and more vivid nightmares about the incident, she decides she has to find out what is going on.

B-STORY

When Mari goes back to the location she meets Ghost B, a young man around her age, and seemingly the only ghost that she can converse with.

PROMISE OF THE PREMISE

Mari realizes that the events she is dreaming about are ghosts trapped in a death loop, and sets out to try and stop them by interrupting the loop.

MID-POINT

As Mari gets more and more engrossed with the ghosts, she begins to value Ghost B's company more and more. At the same time she begins experiencing a new dream where she cannot see the ghost's face.

BAD GUYS CLOSE IN

When trying to set another ghost free, Mari almost dies as the ghost issues her a warning before it disappears.

The new nightmare becomes more vivid but the ghost's face is still obscured.

ALL IS LOST

Unheeding of the warning, Mari continues to free ghosts at night and gets hit by a car that she did not see coming.

DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

Mari wakes up in the hospital room, tried and hurt. Without Ghost B, she finally breaks down from the combined stress and sadness of her mother's death.

BREAK INTO THREE

Mari experiences the nightmare again and wakes up with the realization of who it is and checks herself out of the hospital.

FINALE

Mari confronts Ghost B and it is revealed that he is the one who caused the deaths of all the other ghosts. Ghost B fades away after reconciling with Mari.

FINAL IMAGE

In the end, Mari sits outside a cafe on a sunny day, relaxed, as she writes in her mother's unfinished journal.

Cinematic Beat Boards

These layouts were done as a part of a collaborative project with Sandra Vanegas and Adeline Kon, under the tutelage of Shanth Enjeti. Following Blake Snyder's "beat sheet" format for screenwriting, we produced 2 narratives, "The Journey" and "In the Night," and proceeded to create cinematic layouts for each "beat."

"In the Night" is written by Sandra Vanegas.

Full written narrative "Beat Sheets" can be found here:
